What is our Mentorship Program

Mentoring is defined as “a process whereby an individual guides another individual in the development and re-examination of their own ideas, learning, and personal and professional development.” At our organization, we offer a mentoring service that trains members to mentor one another, facilitating support in career progression, development, and growth. This process enables individuals to explore new ideas with confidence while reflecting on their opportunities, goals, and any challenges they may encounter. Mentoring can empower participants to effectively manage their careers, maximize their potential, and enhance their skills. The common benefits of being mentored include support during times of change, personal development, broadened horizons, elevated aspirations, increased confidence, improved performance, greater job satisfaction, and enhanced creativity through innovative thinking.

Our expectations from a Mentor?

Mentoring is a vital process that fosters personal and professional growth by encouraging individuals to expand their thinking and guiding them in making informed decisions. Mentors engage mentees through thoughtful questioning and constructive challenges, providing both direction and encouragement. It is important to note that mentors are volunteers who dedicate their time, energy, and expertise without any financial compensation; therefore, the value of having their undivided attention during these sessions cannot be overstated.

To optimize the mentoring relationship, it is crucial to establish clear expectations and boundaries. It is essential to recognize the limitations of the mentoring role, as mentors are not responsible for:

– Solving all problems, providing definitive answers, or having solutions for every issue.
– Dictating actions or prescribing behavior in specific situations.
– Assuming responsibility for the mentee’s decisions.
– Being available on-demand at any time.
– Determining the schedule or topics for discussion; these should be collaboratively established.
– Acting as counselors or offering psychological support.
– Delivering formal training.
– Replacing other significant relationships, such as those with direct supervisors.

It is also beneficial to understand that a mentor from a different discipline or professional background can still provide valuable insights. Their role is to encourage, listen, and present alternative perspectives that can enhance the mentee’s thought processes and decision-making capabilities.

Our expectations from a Mentee?

Our mentor serves as a trusted advisor and an impartial listener, dedicated to assisting you in exploring your thoughts, ideas, and options. They aim to broaden your perspective and guide you toward making your own decisions by asking insightful questions and challenging your viewpoints while offering direction and encouragement. It is essential to acknowledge that your mentor is a volunteer who willingly dedicates their time, energy, and expertise without financial compensation; their undivided attention during these sessions is an invaluable resource.

Understanding the boundaries and expectations of the mentoring relationship is crucial. Here are the limitations of what your mentor is not expected to do:

  • They will not solve all your problems or provide definitive answers to every question.
  • They are not there to tell you what to do or how to act in specific situations.
  • Your mentor will not take responsibility for your choices or decisions.
  • They may not always be available when you need them.
  • Your mentor will not dictate when to meet or the topics for discussion.
  • They are not qualified to provide counseling services.
  • They will not serve as a trainer or educator in a formal sense.
  • They are not meant to replace significant relationships you have, such as with a line manager.

What you can expect from your Mentor

To maximize the benefits of your mentoring relationship, it is essential for you to actively seek development opportunities, engage in self-learning, and remain open to feedback and encouragement. Your contribution to effective mentoring sessions is critical, and here are several ways you can enhance this experience:

  • Make sure you are well-prepared for meetings to utilize the available time effectively.
  • Present challenging and relevant issues to discuss, allowing for deeper exploration and value from the experience.
  • Steer each session in the direction you wish to explore, fostering a more personalized and impactful dialogue.
  • Embrace new approaches, behaviors, and techniques to extend your capabilities and achieve your goals.
  • Follow through on the outcomes discussed during sessions, demonstrating your dedication to personal growth.
  • Feel free to ask for assistance when needed.
  • Engage with your mentor in a manner that encourages broader perspectives.

Conversely, it is equally important to avoid actions that could hinder the effectiveness of the mentoring relationship:

  • Refrain from bringing a lengthy list of demands, expecting your mentor to fulfill all of them.
  • Only come to sessions with topics for discussion, as this undermines the purpose of the mentoring experience.
  • Treat mentoring meetings as a high priority in your schedule rather than a low one.
  • Act in accordance with the organization’s ethical guidelines.
  • Do not discuss issues that may be commercially sensitive to either party’s employer, and maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive personal information.
  • Treat all individuals with respect and adopt a non-judgmental attitude throughout the mentoring process.
